As the complexity of missile threats increases, the United States is taking steps to enhance its defense capabilities. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee Airland Subcommittee, along with Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK), introduced the Ground and Orbital Launched Defeat of Emergent Nuclear Destruction and Other Missile Engagements (GOLDEN DOME) Act of 2025. This legislation aims to modernize and expand U.S. missile defense systems across various domains.

The GOLDEN DOME Act focuses on improving all-domain awareness and bolstering missile defense against threats from rogue and near-peer nations, particularly hypersonic and cruise missiles. It supports President Donald Trump's executive order for a next-generation missile defense shield, with Vice Chief of Space Operations General Michael Guetlein nominated to lead its implementation.

Senator Cramer stated, "Our adversaries have developed more advanced long-range weapons over the last couple of decades, posing a significant threat to our national security." He emphasized the need for a layered missile defense system to protect against evolving threats.

Senator Sullivan added that recent missile developments from Iran, Russia, and China highlight the necessity for a robust defense system. He noted that the initiative includes presidential leadership, appropriated funding, and comprehensive legislation.

The act proposes enhancements such as space-based sensors and new intercept technologies while modernizing existing infrastructure like Alaska’s Fort Greely interceptor fields and North Dakota’s PARCS radar system. The modernization efforts at Cavalier Space Force Station's PARCS radar will improve detection capabilities for intercontinental and sea-launched missiles.

This legislation is supported by several senators including John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Tim Sheehy (R-MT), Katie Britt (R-AL), Jim Banks (R-IN), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Tim Scott (R-SC).
